How did Jennifer Love Hewitt got the role of Melinda Gordon?
In Ghost Whisperer. They did not regret Jennifer Love Hewitt on the TV series. She is good.
The skinny as told by GW executive produces Kim Moses and Ian Sander:
"Here's how the 'Love connection' worked. Over the previous six months we had gotten to know our development neighbor, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and had been talking about developing a project together. But when our pilot got ordered she was still awaiting word as to the fate of a pilot she had just completed. Love was not available for Ghost Whisperer. Yet!
Meanwhile, we were in the early stages of prepping the pilot. It's what's known as a 'rolling yellow light'. Even though we hadn't officially been given the go-ahead to start shooting - because we didn't have a star onboard our train - we were putting our crew together and creating 'the board'. The board is a wall in our office that we plaster with images and screen captures pulled from various sources (magazines, art books, DVDs). These images represent the look and tone that we're going for on character, wardrobe, set dressing, locations, lighting and every other aspect of the project that we're working on. As we go forward, everyone involved in the production (director, production designer, director of photography, even the production assistants) add to the board. Each day, we look at the collage of images to make sure that we haven't strayed from the vision of the show.
At this point, the search for 'Melinda' was in full throttle. We were scouring talent agencies on both coasts and in other countries. We couldn't seem to find the right actress for the role. Ironically, she was sitting in the office next door, but she wasn't available. When Jennifer Love Hewitt's pilot was not picked up, we were immediately at her doorstep asking her to read Ghost Whisperer. She did, and fell in love with it.
