Why is it more important to the media when a pretty young white girl is missing/murdered than a minority girl?
or unnatractive, overweight white girl
Is it because we as a society assume pretty white suburbanite white girls will lead happy, successful lives and to have it cut short is a greater tragedy than if it happened to a minority or unattractive poor white girl?
I think there is a racist bias in most Western media.
Most is cultural, but there is probably some financial incentive involved as well as a genetic component to the bias - the last two very difficult to put a number on.
I asked, after seeing the film Poltergeist, Why is the potential victim a sweet, young, blond girl instead of a young boy? Same thing after seeing The Exorcist. In both films, the involvement (the emotional connection/commitment) of the audience to the young female would have been much less if it had been a young male. Bottom Line (for me and many others) : Males are far more "expendable" than females.
You're criticism is on track towards the various biases that our media and society have in general...and it's simply not like that in many other countries. The USA is racist to the extreme and the media promotes the divisions within society despite our claims otherwise.
