Segregation Photo
Did segregation occur all over America?
Did racial segregation occur all over America during the 19th/earth 20th century? Or was it just in the southern former-slavery states?
I find it hard to imagine somewhere progressive like New York having segregated stuff - and I'm pretty sure all of the photos I've seen are from places like Tennessee.
(I'm British, so please forgive me if this is obvious to any Americans reading.)
Also: as it was "legally enforced" (as is my understanding), does that mean that, say, businesses were obliged to segregate people or could they opt not to?
Segregation was practiced in the north, and south. Slavery was also practiced in both north and south. Slavery only became an issue when the industrialized north leaned on the south to stop slavery. The south was highly dependent upon slavery for farming the cotton that the north produced into garments, etc. Following the Civil war, segregation was nation wide, though "freed" black men and women, with papers to prove it were afforded citizenship in the north(but not as equals). In the southern states, "Jim Crow" laws were put into place as an attempt to keep at least a little of the "old way of life" in place. As recent as the last decade, a slave burial ground was found by a construction crew in New York City. Racism is, and has been a rampant disease throughout the history of America(especially in the Five Points District of N.Y.C). My question to you on that subject is, how do you feel?
