How can you differentiate a real hand gun from a toy gun? Like, if you're asked for your valuables with a gun?

But, you don't know if the gun is fake or not. Or, if it is real, whether it is loaded or not. It happened to me twice, when a friend of my friend pranked me and I thought that the toy handgun was real. The second time, the guy was just really stoned.
I didn't know that the guy is a friend if my friend when he pranked me though. The other guy was just some unknown stoned guy. Thank God it wasn't a real gun.

I wouldn't risk it even with a toy gun. There are plenty of replicas that say replica on the side of a firearm that have been converted to fire live ammunition.
